Dr Katherine Twamley is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the Social Research Institute, University College London (UCL), and Programme Director for the BSc Sociology undergraduate program. Her research focuses on gender, love, intimacy, family dynamics, and longitudinal comparative studies. She leads a ten-country consortium exploring families’ pandemic experiences, investigating adherence to public health measures and their social/health implications. Her work emphasizes how time and context shape family practices and policies.
Twamley’s research spans UK and Indian contexts, examining parental leave, parenthood transitions, and gendered care divisions. She employs innovative methods like digital ethnography with the Indeemo app, uncovering everyday practices and meanings during crises. Her findings highlight pandemic-induced anxieties about inequality, trust in governance, and rethinking work-life arrangements. She advocates for policies mitigating pandemic-related risks and explores post-pandemic societal shifts.
Key areas of interest include global fatherhood, gender equality in parenting, and the sociocultural impacts of health crises. Her recent work underscores the need for adaptive research methodologies, particularly in volatile pandemic contexts. Future projects aim to expand digital research tools and analyze evolving family structures in global contexts.
