Katherine Profeta is a Professor in the Practice of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism at the Yale School of Drama, with a secondary appointment in Yale College’s Theater and Performance Studies program. She holds BA, MFA, and DFA degrees from Yale University. Her work bridges academic scholarship and artistic practice in contemporary dance and collaboratively-generated performance.
Education: BA Yale College; MFA and DFA in Dramaturgy from Yale School of Drama.
Research focuses on mid-20th century improvisational practices in dance/theater and their intersection with collaborative creation. She has collaborated with artists like Ralph Lemon, Elevator Repair Service, and Urban Bush Women. Current projects include a book on Darrell Jones and Ralph Lemon’s improvisational practices.
Her writing appears in Performing Arts Journal, Theater magazine, and MoMA’s Modern Dance series. Awards include the 2015 Raymond D. Gasper Chair’s Award.
Professional service includes chairing ASTR’s Sally Banes Prize committee and Yale’s Digital Education committee. She has led workshops on dramaturgy in choreography and is a founding member of Elevator Repair Service theater company.
