Michael Evenden is a Professor and Department Chair of Theater Studies at Emory University, where he also serves as Director of Undergraduate Research. He holds a DFA in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism from the Yale School of Drama, with additional teaching roles at Brigham Young University, Allegheny College, Trinity University, and Cornell University. His career includes roles as a dramaturg for prominent theaters such as the Alliance Theater, Georgia Shakespeare Festival, and Theatrical Outfit, alongside consultancy work with actors and playwrights. He authored Silence and Selfhood: The Desire of Order in Mozart’s Magic Flute (Peter Lang Press) and contributed scholarly articles and reviews, including work on Brockett and Hildy’s History of the Theatre.
Evenden has directed and acted in experimental performances at Theater Emory, focusing on integrating dramatic, poetic, and historical materials. His dramaturgical collaborations span diverse projects, including world premieres and adaptations of literary works. He has advised playwrights like Robert Schenkkan and supported productions of major playwrights such as August Wilson and Tom Stoppard.
His academic contributions emphasize critical analysis of opera, theater history, and cross-cultural dramaturgy. Evenden’s work bridges scholarly research with practical theater production, reflecting his commitment to both education and artistic innovation.
