Katherine Morris is a Professor and BNFL Research Chair at the University of Manchester's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. She leads the Dalton Nuclear Institute's Nuclear Environment and Waste theme and directs the Radioactive Waste Management Research Support Office and NNUF RADER Facility. Her research focuses on radionuclide behavior in engineered/natural environments, with emphasis on deep geological disposal, effluent cleanup, and contaminated land remediation. She employs biogeochemical, spectroscopic, and radiochemical techniques to study long-lived radionuclides like Sr, Tc, U, Np, and Pu.
Her work is funded by NERC, EU grants, and industry partners including Sellafield Ltd. and Radioactive Waste Management Ltd. Key projects include the BIGRAD Consortium and the Sellafield Site Futures initiative. Morris holds the 2018 Women in Nuclear Mission Possible award and leads collaborations on microbial interactions with nuclear waste materials, steel biocorrosion, and colloid-radionuclide dynamics.
Research outputs (120+) span radioactive waste disposal, particle imaging, and bioremediation strategies. Notable contributions include studies on uranium persulfide complexes, uranium-silicate colloids, and strontium removal via carbonate precipitation. She advises on nuclear policy through the Dalton Nuclear Policy Group and has authored impactful media on nuclear waste management.
