Jixin Qiao is a Professor in the Department of Environmental and Resource Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where she leads research in radioanalytical chemistry and environmental tracer studies. Her work integrates advanced automation, mass spectrometry, and radiochemical methods to study radionuclides in environmental and waste systems, with a focus on oceanic and climate-related applications.

Her research interests are centered on:
- Development of automated radioanalytical systems using flow techniques (e.g., flow injection, lab-on-valve)
- Determination of low-level radionuclides (e.g., ²³⁶U, ¹³⁷Cs, ⁹⁹Tc, Pu isotopes) in environmental, biological, and waste samples
- Application of anthropogenic and natural radioisotopes as tracers for ocean circulation, carbon cycling, climate change, and pollutant transport
- Speciation analysis of radionuclides and trace elements
- Environmental radioactivity monitoring in Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands
- Microplastics pollution studies using radiotracer approaches
Her recent publications highlight a strong trend in using uranium isotopes (²³³U, ²³⁶U) and other radionuclides to trace environmental processes in marine systems, particularly in the Baltic and Arctic Seas. These works combine long-term monitoring, advanced analytical methods, and international collaboration to assess nuclear reprocessing impacts, ocean dynamics, and pollution pathways.
Scientific contributions and recognition include:
- Guest editor for Frontiers in Marine Science and Molecules
- Reviewer for nearly 40 peer-reviewed SCI journals
- Web of Science H-index: 21 (citations: 1061); Google Scholar H-index: 22 (citations: 1359) as of March 2024
- Author of nearly 70 peer-reviewed SCI papers, 7 book chapters, and 35 conference contributions including 9 invited talks
Jixin Qiao has played a significant role in research mentoring and project leadership. She has supervised 5 postdocs, 5 PhD, and 1 master's student as main supervisor, and co-supervised 2 postdocs, 10 PhD, and 2 master's students. She has led 10 international and 5 Danish research projects, and participated in 10 others, securing a total of 20 million DKK in funding since 2014. Current projects include PhD-level research on microplastics in the Baltic Sea and radioanalytical method development for nuclear waste, as well as participation in the EURAMET MetroPOEM project focused on harmonizing environmental pollutant measurements in Europe.
She is actively involved in international scientific networks and expert groups, including:
- Radioactivity expert group in HELOCM, AMAP, and OSPAR
- Long-term collaborations with institutions such as University of Oxford, SCK CEN, IAEA, EU Commission, and Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research
- Active research partnerships with over 30 international universities and institutes
