Dr. Katherine Kenny is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Sydney, Deputy Director of the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies, and an ARC DECRA Principal Research Fellow. She holds a PhD from the University of California, San Diego (2015). Her research focuses on health and illness through social theory and qualitative methods, examining how health practices evolve in biomedical contexts. She has secured over AUD$2.2 million in research funding, including four ARC grants and international funding from NSF/SSRC.
Research interests include antimicrobial resistance, cancer survivorship, temporalities of health, and the sociology of care. Current projects address antimicrobial use in families, out-of-pocket healthcare costs, and pandemic impacts on cancer care.
Awards include the University of Sydney SOAR Prize (2023–2025) and multiple research excellence awards. She supervises PhD students on topics like chronicity in digital age youth and contested chronic illnesses. Her work spans over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including books like Survivorship: A Sociology of Cancer in Everyday Life (2021).
She leads the Sydney Centre for Healthy Societies and collaborates with global institutions. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, public health, and policy analysis.
