Professor Katherine Ibbett is a Professor of French at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Trinity College. She holds the role of Director of Graduate Studies in Modern Languages, overseeing interdisciplinary research across the Faculty. Her academic background includes a PhD from UC Berkeley and prior positions at the University of Michigan and University College London.
Her research focuses on early modern French literature and culture, with emphasis on affect studies, environmental humanities, and imperial narratives. Key projects include Compassion’s Edge (2018), exploring post-religious toleration dynamics, and her current work Liquid Empire, examining river writing as a lens for French imperial history. She has held prestigious fellowships at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute and the Leverhulme Foundation.
Teaching responsibilities include early modern topics such as gender in literature and France’s engagement with the Americas, alongside postgraduate courses on comparative methodologies.
