Katherine C. MacKinnon, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Saint Louis University (SLU), within the College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. Her research focuses on biological anthropology, particularly primate behavior, evolution of social complexity, and ethical considerations in field primatology. She has conducted fieldwork across 15 countries, observing primates in diverse ecosystems.
Her work integrates sustainability, conservation, and human-wildlife interactions, with current projects in Belize and St. Louis. Notable contributions include co-editing the seminal Primates in Perspective (2011) and developing ethical guidelines for field primatology. Her publications span primate behavior, conservation biology, and neuroanthropology.
MacKinnon’s research emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, linking social behavior to ecological and evolutionary dynamics. She has authored or co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and edited volumes since 1992. Her expertise bridges academic research and applied conservation, addressing global challenges in biodiversity preservation and ethical field practices.
