Lori Sheeran is a Professor of Anthropology at Central Washington University (2011–present), holding the CWU Distinguished Professor of Research title since 2018. She previously served as Associate Professor (2005–2011), Assistant Professor (2003–2005) at CWU, and held academic roles at California State University-Fullerton and the University of Southern California. Her research focuses on biological anthropology, human-primate interactions, Asian primates, and conservation biology, with extensive fieldwork in China (1990–2017) and Bhutan (2018–present).
Fieldwork highlights include studies on black gibbons in Yunnan Province, Tibetan macaques in Anhui Province, and human-monkey interactions in Bhutan involving Himalayan langurs and Assamese macaques. She leads courses on primatology, biodiversity, and primate conservation, including field schools in Bhutan and China.
Her 15 most recent publications (2018–2024) analyze primate behavior, conservation challenges, and human-wildlife interactions. Notable works include studies on Tibetan macaque social dynamics, golden langur sleep patterns, and pandemic impacts on primate tourism. She serves on editorial boards for journals like Humans and Frontiers in Mammal Science, contributing to peer review in conservation and primatology.
As a leader in primate conservation research, Sheeran emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to balancing ecological preservation with cultural practices, particularly in Bhutan’s wetlands and Himalayan regions.
