Magdalena Svensson

Dr Magdalena Svensson is a Lecturer and Laboratory Technician in the MSc Primate Conservation programme at Oxford Brookes University, affiliated with the School of Law and Social Sciences. She has been a core member of the Nocturnal Primate Research Group and the Oxford Wildlife Trade Research Group since 2010, contributing significantly to primate conservation research.

Her educational background includes a PhD and MSc in Primate Conservation from Oxford Brookes University, an BSc in Animal Science, and an FdSc in Wildlife Conservation from Nottingham Trent University.

Dr Svensson's research focuses on nocturnal primates, primate ecology, wildlife trade, and conservation biology. She investigates illegal trade in primates, ivory, and pangolins, and explores human-primate interactions, ethnoprimatology, and animal welfare issues. Her work often integrates local ecological knowledge and examines the impacts of tourism and social media on primate conservation.

Her recent publications show a strong trend in wildlife trade monitoring, human-wildlife conflict, zoonotic disease risk, and conservation policy, with fieldwork spanning Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. She frequently collaborates with international researchers and conservation groups.

She supervises several research students and is actively involved in consultancy on the online trade in nocturnal primates.
