Katharina Schramm is a Professor at the University of Bayreuth, holding the Chair for Social and Cultural Anthropology. Her research bridges political anthropology, critical race studies, science and technology studies (STS), and critical heritage studies, focusing on how knowledge production intersects with inequality, inclusion, and exclusion.
- Current PI: Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence, project Karakul Circulations
- Research focus: Genomics, racialization, border regimes, political subjectivities
Her work spans diasporic memory (e.g., African Homecoming), memorial landscapes (special issue Landscapes of Violence), and race in science (special issue Technologies of Belonging). Recent publications highlight the entanglements of facial reconstruction, post-apartheid identity, and STS critiques of genomics.
Key article trends include analyzing scientific practices in postcolonial contexts, the role of race in genetic research, and the politics of heritage. She actively engages with public debates on colonial legacies, as seen in her critiques of the Humboldt Forum.
- Collaborators: Amade M'charek, David Skinner, Richard Rottenburg
- Projects: LOST Network (winding down in 2024), Race/Trouble (completed)
