Prof. Dr. Katharina Schramm is a Professor of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Bayreuth since October 2017, within the Faculty of Cultural Studies. She previously held a W2 temporary professorship at Freie Universität Berlin (2015–2017). Her academic journey includes research roles at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (2008–2015) and doctoral supervision in multiple institutions. She holds a Ph.D. from Freie Universität Berlin (2004) and a Master's degree from Humboldt University of Berlin (1997).
Her research focuses on global inequalities, postcolonial studies, race theory, and heritage politics, with a regional emphasis on Africa and diasporic communities. Notable works include studies on Pan-Africanism, genomic ancestry, and the politics of memory. She has supervised numerous doctoral students and contributed to interdisciplinary research clusters like 'Society and Culture in Motion.'
Publications span over two decades, addressing themes such as racialization in Europe, decolonial African studies, and public anthropology. Her work bridges ethnographic fieldwork with critical theory, emphasizing decolonial frameworks and ethical engagement. She actively participates in academic governance, curriculum development, and international collaborations, reflecting her commitment to transformative scholarship.
