Prof. Dr. Katharina Hottmann is a Professor of Historical Musicology at Folkwang Universität der Künste, appointed as of December 1, 2023. Previously, she served as Professor of Historical Musicology at the University of Siegen since March 2020. She is a representative for DFG (German Research Foundation) matters and a leading figure in the field of musicology, particularly in gender studies and cultural history of music.
Research Interests: Her work focuses on historical musicology, with special emphasis on gender and music, the cultural history of song in the Enlightenment period, opera (particularly Richard Strauss), and the Lied tradition. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates historical, cultural, and gender perspectives in music scholarship.
She was co-editor of the Jahrbuch Musik und Gender (2013–2019) and played a key leadership role in the Women's and Gender Studies Working Group of the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung (GfM), serving as Spokesperson and then Vice-Spokesperson from 1919 to 2023.
