Dr. Kate Slater is an Associate Professor in the English Department at Rowan University's College of Humanities & Social Sciences. Her research and teaching focus on 20th- and 21st-century children’s and young adult (YA) literature, with a particular emphasis on queer representation. She co-founded and serves on the editorial board of the journal Research on Diversity in Youth Literature.

- M.A. and Ph.D. in Literature (2010, 2013) — University of California, San Diego
Her research explores how queer female characters in YA literature challenge traditional developmental narratives. She has published in journals such as Genre: Forms of Discourse and Culture, Children’s Literature in Education, and The Lion and the Unicorn, as well as in edited book collections. Her current book project argues for non-linear character arcs in queer YA narratives.
Teaching: Courses include Children’s Literature, Queer Literature, and a senior seminar on queer YA literature.
