Dr. Kate Buchanan is a Research Fellow in Midwifery at Edith Cowan University's School of Nursing and Midwifery. She holds an honorary Research Consultant role with the South Metropolitan Maternity Health Service. With over 20 years of midwifery clinical experience and six years in academia, her roles include Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, Midwifery Lecturer, and Course Coordinator. Buchanan earned her PhD from ECU in 2023, alongside qualifications in nursing, counselling, and midwifery education.
Her research focuses on midwifery ethics, philosophy, and theory, particularly addressing respectful care, post-birth debriefing, and work-life balance. Methodologically, she emphasizes feminist research, action research, and implementation science. Buchanan leads the ECU Safe Quality Midwifery Care Research Group and chairs the WA Midwifery Research Network. She has received the VC International Research Collaboration Award ($5,000) and contributes as a journal reviewer and guest editor.
