Kate Ashley is an Associate Professor and currently serves as the interim Provost and Vice-President (Academic) at Acadia University. She holds a B.A. (Hons) from Acadia University, MèsL from Université de Rouen, M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge, Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, and a J.D. from Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University. Her research focuses on 19th-century literary movements, comparative literature, legal education, and labour law.
Her scholarly interests include Naturalism, Decadence, and Aestheticism in literature; the history of the novel; and the intersection of literature with visual arts and legal systems. She has received notable awards such as the Lorne O. Clarke Prize in Dispute Resolution and the Angus L. MacDonald Prize in Torts. Her recent work explores Franco-Prussian War literature, group identity in naturalist movements, and legal frameworks impacting academic and educational environments.
Her legal expertise complements her academic roles, with publications addressing employment equity in academia, language rights legislation, and constitutional law. She is also engaged in cultural competency training through initiatives like 'The Path: Journey Through Indigenous Canada.'
