Maria Dugas is an Associate Professor of Law at the Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, and a member of the Law & Technology Institute. She also serves as Co-Editor of the Canadian Journal of Law and Technology and Board Member of the Dalhousie Law Journal. Her academic journey includes a B.A. from Lake Forest College, JD and LLM degrees from Schulich School of Law, and Nova Scotia bar admission in 2016. She previously clerked at the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal and practiced at Nova Scotia Legal Aid.
Her research focuses on critical race legal theory, criminal law with a social justice lens, and copyright law. Notable work includes advocating for Impact of Race and Culture Assessments in sentencing African Canadian offenders and analyzing systemic racism in criminal justice systems. Recent work explores anti-Black racism in sentencing and the regulation of racialized athletes in global sports.
Teaching includes courses on Legal Ethics, Tort Law, and Copyright Law. Awards include the James Robinson Johnston Graduate Studies Scholarship, recognizing her academic excellence. Her contributions extend to academic leadership roles and policy advocacy.
