Karin Bürkert is a Senior Researcher (Akademische Oberrätin) at the Ludwig Uhland Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies, University of Tübingen, since 2022. She has been affiliated with the institute since 2014, focusing on regional cultural research, material and visual culture, and their intersections with societal change. Her roles include managing third-party funding acquisition, curating the Archive of Everyday Culture, serving as deputy equal opportunities officer for the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, and leading the Tübingen Association for Empirical Cultural Studies and its publishing house, EKW Publishing House.
- Education: Ph.D. (2014) in Cultural Anthropology/European Ethnology, University of Göttingen; Master's (2008) in Empirical Cultural Studies, Modern German Literature, and Political Science, University of Tübingen.
Research interests span regional cultural management, material and visual culture, gender studies, anthropology of knowledge, and rural-urban dynamics. She explores societal negotiations through cultural practices like nuclear power commemoration, carnival traditions, and everyday objects.
Selected publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to cultural analysis, focusing on rural resource governance, auditory ethnography, and contested histories in museums. Her work bridges academic research, museum practices, and public engagement.
Academic memberships include UNESCO's Baden-Württemberg jury for intangible cultural heritage, Société Internationale d’Ethnologie et de Folklore, and the German Society for Empirical Cultural Studies.
