Alexander Renz is a Research Fellow at the University of Tübingen, affiliated with the Department of Historical and Cultural Anthropology within the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. He leads the German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded project 'Scenographic Museum Exhibitions,' examining the contested role of multimedia and scenographic museum displays in 21st-century cultural institutions. His work bridges museum studies, cultural criticism, and audience reception analysis.
Education: Studied Biology, Political Science, and Empirical Cultural Studies (EKW) at the University of Tübingen, with a Master's focusing on exhibition design involving the HfG-Archiv Ulm. His thesis explored scenography at the House of the History of Baden-Württemberg. Since 2016, he has been a core researcher in the DFG project.
Research focuses on the (Pre)Judgements and Potentials of Scenographic Museum Exhibitions, analyzing public and media discourse, visitor engagement, and institutional legitimacy through methods like participant observation, surveys, and archival studies. He critiques the 'Disneyfication' of museums and questions whether traditional museology adequately addresses contemporary exhibition practices.
Key questions include the evolving role of museums as cultural institutions, the impact of object-centric vs. experience-driven exhibits, and methodological innovations for analyzing modern exhibitions. His work seeks to reconcile mass appeal with academic rigor in cultural display.
