Karen Stoiber

Karen Stoiber is the Kellner Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's School of Education. She serves as Program Director for the School Psychology PhD program and Training Director for the School Psychology EdS/PhD programs. Her roles include teaching courses on consultation, advanced interventions, and practicum supervision.

Dr. Stoiber holds a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MS from UW-Milwaukee. Her research focuses on early literacy, evidence-based practices, functional assessment, and social competence development in children with challenging behaviors. She directs federally-funded projects like the IMPACT Project, Project EMERGE (Early Reading First), and Project PEARLS (U.S. Department of Education grant), collaborating with Milwaukee's Head Start programs to improve literacy outcomes and prevent special education referrals.

Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, school reform, and promoting adolescent connectedness to schools. She co-directs APA Division 16's Task Forces on Women and Evidence-Based Practices, and serves on editorial boards for School Psychology Review and Journal of Applied School Psychology.

Stoiber has received multiple awards including Outstanding Article honors from APA Division 16 (2001, 2003) and the Society for the Study of School Psychology (2007). Her grants fund teams of graduate research assistants and literacy tutors, advancing initiatives like RTI models and smaller learning communities in high schools.

Her research lab focuses on translating evidence-based interventions into practice through partnerships with schools and community programs. Current projects examine sustainable literacy strategies, teacher retention, and systemic educational equity efforts.
