Professor Karen Hughes holds dual appointments as a Professor in the Alberta School of Business - Department of Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Management and the Faculty of Arts - Sociology Department at the University of Alberta. She earned her PhD from the University of Cambridge and has been at the University of Alberta since 1994. Her research and teaching focus on work, organizations, labor markets, and inequality, with a particular emphasis on entrepreneurship, gender diversity, and inclusive economies.
Key projects include studies on women’s entrepreneurial success in regional ecosystems, post-pandemic labor market trends, and mitigating gender/racial bias in algorithms. She leads cross-disciplinary initiatives like the BIAS: Responsible AI for Labour Market Equality project, collaborating with computer scientists and social scientists. Her work has been funded by SSHRC, Future Skills Canada, and GEM.
Professor Hughes serves on the editorial boards of the International Small Business Journal and Gender in Management, and co-chairs the Diana International Research Conference. She is a Visiting Research Scholar at Babson College’s DIKI and co-authored major reports on global and Canadian women’s entrepreneurship. Her teaching includes courses on the sociology of work, gender and leadership, and organizational dynamics.
