Karen Dynan is a Professor of the Practice of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) and a Professor of the Practice of Economics at Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). She also serves as a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. Dynan previously held roles such as Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy at the U.S. Treasury (2014–2017), Vice President at Brookings Institution (2009–2013), and staff economist at the Federal Reserve Board (1992–2009). Her research focuses on monetary/fiscal policy, consumer behavior, and economic measurement. Dynan chairs the American Economic Association’s Committee on Economic Statistics and contributes to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas’ Academic Advisory Committee.
Education: Ph.D. in Economics (Harvard University), A.B. in Economics (Brown University). Her recent work includes analyzing pandemic-era inflation dynamics, South Korea’s labor market gender gaps, and U.S. federal debt challenges. She has advised on policy reforms addressing economic stability, retirement security, and student debt. Dynan’s affiliations include the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Center for International Development, and Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at HKS.
