Karen Dunn Lopez is a Professor and Director of the Center for Nursing Classification and Clinical Effectiveness at the University of Iowa. She holds a BSN from the University of Pennsylvania, MPH in Health Services from Boston University, PhD in Nursing Science from University of Iowa, and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Illinois at Chicago. Her research program focuses on enhancing clinical decision-making through nursing informatics and health technology innovations.
Research Interests: Dr. Dunn Lopez specializes in usability optimization of health information systems, clinical decision support design, and implementation of standardized nursing terminologies (NANDA-I, NIC, NOC) for knowledge generation. Her work applies human factors engineering and big data analytics to improve patient outcomes, with current projects including tailored clinical decision support for nurses and integration of nursing care data with physician discharge summaries.
