Dr. Karen Bacon earned her bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Stern College for Women and her doctorate in microbiology from the University of California at Los Angeles, followed by post-doctoral research at UCLA and Indiana University. She made history as the first Stern College alumna to receive a full-time faculty appointment at Yeshiva College, where she served as Assistant Professor of Biology for two years.
Dr. Bacon has held the position of Dean of Stern College for Women since 1977 and was appointed The Mordecai D. Katz and Dr. Monique C. Katz Dean of the Undergraduate Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Yeshiva University in 2015. In this role, she serves as Dean of Yeshiva College, focusing on curricular initiatives, academic policies, and research collaborations.
Her scholarly contributions include co-authoring works in the Journal of Bacteriology, the Journal of Ultrastructure Research, the Torah U-Madda Journal, Tradition Magazine, and CUR Quarterly. These publications span topics such as biochemical responses to Halakhic challenges, women's roles in Jewish education, and undergraduate science research models.
Dr. Bacon's research interests bridge microbiology, biochemistry, and Jewish studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections between scientific inquiry and religious education. She is affiliated with both Stern College for Women and Yeshiva College, and her career reflects a commitment to advancing academic leadership and pedagogical innovation.
