Professor Kamila Hawthorne is the Head of the Graduate Entry Medicine Programme at Swansea University's Medical School. A practicing GP in South Wales for 24 years, she graduated from Oxford University (1984) and completed GP training in Nottingham (1988). Her academic roles include former Vice Chair (Professional Development) at the RCGP, National Elected Member of RCGP Council, and Bevan Commissioner. Her expertise focuses on social accountability of medical schools, curriculum design emphasizing community engagement, health inequalities, and integrating leadership/technology into medical training. She pioneered community-facing curricula, particularly addressing BAME diabetes groups. Awards include an MBE (2017) and dual GP of the Year accolades.
Research interests include health access disparities, with a MD focused on BAME Type 2 diabetes management. She leads community projects in diabetes and heart disease. Teaching priorities include equality/diversity, primary care education, and medical assessment innovation.
