Sarah Prior

Dr. Sarah Prior is a Senior Lecturer in the Diabetes Research Group at Swansea University Medical School, part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science. She joined the group in 2007 and focuses on investigating links between Type 2 diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular comorbidities, with a keen interest in bariatric surgery and molecular biomarkers. She co-directs the MSc Diabetes Practice program and teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including modules on medical genetics, biochemistry, and the Graduate Entry Medical Degree.

Her research sits within the 'Biomarkers and Genes' theme, emphasizing biomarker identification for cardiovascular complications and obesity-related diabetes. Collaborative work includes retinopathy mechanisms and diabetes complications. Key affiliations include Associated Editor for Diabetic Medicine and committee roles with Obesity at the NNEdPro Global Centre for Nutrition & Health.

Research interests span diabetes, obesity, bariatric surgery outcomes, incretin hormones, oxidative stress, and gene expression analysis. Notable grants include studies on ghrelin axis effects, mitochondrial DNA, and retinal models. She has supervised postgraduate research projects, including studies on nocturnal hemodialysis and environmental chemical exposure impacts.

Dr. Prior’s work integrates clinical and basic research, addressing public health challenges like diabetes prevalence and obesity in Wales. Her lab is based in the Grove Building, contributing to Swansea’s Diabetes Research Group initiatives.
