Kalipso Chalkidou

Kalipso Chalkidou is a Visiting Professor at the School of Public Health, Imperial College London, and the founding Head of the Department of Health Finance at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. She also holds adjunct roles at King’s College London and Griffith University. Her expertise spans global health policy, health technology assessment (HTA), and evidence-based decision making for universal health coverage (UHC). She founded NICE International and leads the international Decision Support Initiative (iDSI), focusing on low- and middle-income countries.

Dr. Chalkidou earned a PhD in molecular biology from Newcastle University and an MD (Hons) from the University of Athens. Her research emphasizes institutional capacity building in countries like China, India, and South Africa, leveraging HTA to optimize healthcare resource allocation. She has contributed to national reforms in Colombia, Turkey, and the Middle East, collaborating with global institutions such as the World Bank and the Global Fund.

Her work addresses challenges in equitable healthcare financing, gender bias in health systems, and pandemic response strategies. Notable projects include designing cost-effective dialysis protocols in Rwanda and advocating for fair vaccine distribution during the COVID-19 pandemic. She sits on the Board of Consilium Scientific and editorial boards of multiple journals, with over 150 peer-reviewed publications.

Scientific recognition includes the Harkness Fellowship in Health Policy and Practice. Her articles focus on HTA methodologies, equity in healthcare prioritization, and global health financing frameworks. Collaborations with organizations like HITAP (Thailand) and KEMRI (Kenya) underscore her commitment to context-specific solutions for healthcare challenges.
