Dr. Katrina Piatek-Jimenez is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Central Michigan University. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona (2004) and a B.S. from the University of California, Santa Barbara (1999). Currently on sabbatical, her research focuses on mathematics education with emphases on equity in STEM, particularly gender-related issues, student career motivation, stereotypes of mathematicians, and undergraduate proof comprehension.
Her professional affiliations include leadership roles in organizations such as the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America. Teaching specialties include geometry, quantitative reasoning, proof-writing, and methods for teaching college mathematics. Her work integrates media and popular culture (e.g., using Disney’s Frozen to teach fractals) to enhance student engagement.
Research highlights include studies on gender stereotypes influencing STEM participation, career choice determinants for mathematics students, and equitable curriculum design. She collaborates internationally through the Gender and Sexuality in Mathematics Education working group, addressing systemic barriers and promoting inclusive pedagogy. Her recent work explores intersectional identities in physics and mathematics education, emphasizing underrepresented groups' experiences.
Piatek-Jimenez’s contributions span over 30 peer-reviewed publications, including influential articles on women’s persistence in mathematics and textbook equity analysis. Her scholarship bridges theory and practice, advising educators on fostering equitable learning environments and empowering students through evidence-based strategies.
