Friedrichs' research interests center on international relations theory, with special emphasis on intercultural approaches to global politics. He has developed an intercultural theory of international relations and advocates for abduction as a methodological approach in international research. His current work examines great power relations across different global regions (Global West, Global East, Global North, Global South) and relations between Muslim minorities and non-Muslim majorities.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on cross-cultural understanding, with particular attention to Muslim-Christian relations in various contexts (England, India, China). His book Integration in Multicultural England: Community Relations Between Muslims and Non-Muslims (2025) continues this trajectory, building on earlier work like Hindu-Muslim Relations: What Europe Might Learn from India (2019) and research on Han-Muslim relations in China.
- Honourable Mention in Rachel Carson Environment Book Award (2014)
Friedrichs actively supervises doctoral research in international relations and political sociology, with particular interest in religion and world politics, as well as Muslim-majority relations. His teaching for the MSc in Global Governance and Diplomacy includes seminars on Religion in World Politics and Qualitative Research Methods. His research projects include 'Fear-anger contests: Governmental and populist politics of emotion' and 'Muslims and non-Muslims in England,' demonstrating his ongoing engagement with contemporary political challenges.
