Adeel Malik is an Associate Professor of Development Economics and Globe Fellow in the Economies of Muslim Societies at the University of Oxford. He is affiliated with St Peter's College and the Oxford Department of International Development (ODID). His research focuses on the political economy of Muslim societies, long-run development, and the Middle East, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. He has held roles such as Research Fellow in Economics and Islamic Centre Lecturer in Development Economics. Malik’s work includes the award-winning article 'The Economics of the Arab Spring' and projects like the IFPRI study on Pakistan’s public goods provision. He teaches on graduate programs in Development Studies and Global Governance. Additionally, he contributes to public discourse via op-eds in outlets like The New York Times and Project Syndicate.
Malik earned his doctorate in Economics as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and has held prior affiliations at Harvard University and Merton College. He co-directs the Political Economy of Private Sector Dynamism in the Middle East project and serves as an associate editor of the Palgrave Dictionary of Economics. His research bridges economics, history, and policy, addressing issues such as institutional constraints, political instability, and the role of the military in Pakistan’s governance.
