Jutta Heckhausen

Jutta Heckhausen is a Distinguished Professor of Psychological Science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), specializing in life-span developmental psychology, motivational psychology, and individual agency. Her research explores how individuals navigate major life transitions—such as school-to-work shifts, health challenges, and aging—through goal engagement, disengagement, and adjustment. She leads the UCI Life-Span Development and Motivation Laboratory and collaborates extensively in interdisciplinary studies.

• Education: PhD in Psychology (1985, University of Strathclyde), MA (1980) and BA (1977) in Psychology from Ruhr-Universität Bochum.

Her work integrates theories like the life-span theory of control (with Richard Schulz) and the motivational theory of life-span development (with Carsten Wrosch). Recent studies focus on STEM education, post-stroke rehabilitation, and pandemic impacts on career aspirations, emphasizing adaptive control strategies and social equity.

Awards include the 1999 Max Planck Research Award, 2014 APA Baltes Distinguished Research Achievement Award, and 2020 Gerontological Society of America Career Contribution Award. She has also received UCI’s Teaching Excellence Award (2005) and Chancellor’s Award (2014).

Her Life-Span Development and Motivation Laboratory at UCI investigates how social contexts, implicit motives, and control strategies shape developmental outcomes, with applications in education, health, and aging.
