Dr. Justin Stover is a Lecturer in Classical Studies at the University of Edinburgh since 2017. He holds a BA and PhD from Harvard University, preceded by undergraduate studies at Christendom College (Virginia, USA). His research focuses on the classical tradition, Platonism, medieval Latin, and humanism, with particular attention to the transmission of knowledge in medieval manuscripts and the intellectual history of late antiquity and the Middle Ages.
Previous roles include Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at All Souls College (2013–2016) and College Fellow at Harvard University (2011). He has been a Harvard College Fellow (2011–2013) and a Fifty-Pound Fellow since 2020. His publications explore topics such as Hildegard of Bingen’s scholarly context, the evolution of Latin verbs in medieval texts, and the preservation of Plato’s works in medieval Europe.
Key research themes include the intersection of medieval scholastic practices with classical heritage, the role of marginalia in textual interpretation, and the decline of Platonic studies during the medieval period. His work bridges classical philology, medieval history, and the history of ideas.
