Barbara Newman is Professor of English, Classics, and History at Northwestern University, holding the John Evans Chair of Latin. She earned her Ph.D. from Yale University (1981). Her research focuses on medieval religious culture, women’s spirituality, and comparative literature, with a strong emphasis on textual translation and analysis of medieval religious women’s works.
Her notable works include God and the Goddesses (2003), Medieval Crossover (2013), and The Permeable Self (2021). She has translated key medieval texts like Hildegard of Bingen’s Symphonia and Mechthild of Hackeborn’s Book of Special Grace. Her recent scholarship explores gender fluidity, monastic theology, and parish piety in the Middle Ages.
Prof. Newman has been honored with fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, ACLS, and NEH, and previously held Northwestern’s Charles Deering McCormick Chair for Teaching Excellence. She directs the Medieval Studies graduate cluster and has advised numerous interdisciplinary projects. Her affiliations include the Material History Lab (postdoctoral fellowship) and the Kaplan Center for the Humanities.
