Fiona Griffiths

Fiona Griffiths is the Bella Mabury and Eloise Mabury Knapp Professor of Humanities and Professor of History at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments in Religious Studies and German Studies. She directs the France-Stanford Center and oversees graduate teaching in the History Department. Her research focuses on medieval Western Europe's intellectual and religious life (9th-13th centuries), particularly gender dynamics within religious reform movements and interactions between religious men and women. Key works include The Garden of Delights (2007) and Nuns' Priests' Tales (2018), examining monastic life and women's spiritual agency. She has held fellowships from the NEH, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and Radcliffe Institute.

Her academic roles include serving as Medieval Academy of America Fellow and Series Editor for Sense, Matter, and Medium. Education includes a PhD from Cambridge University. Research interests span late antiquity, medieval gender studies, and religious artifact analysis. Major publications include co-edited volumes on medieval German religious life and sensory reflections in medieval artifacts, alongside influential articles in Speculum and Church History.

Griffiths' work bridges monastic history, material culture studies, and feminist historiography. Current projects explore clerical wives in medieval Bavaria and sensory dimensions of medieval religious objects. She advises on interdisciplinary initiatives linking medieval studies with modern humanities pedagogy through her France-Stanford Center leadership.
