Justin Livingstone is a Senior Lecturer at Queen's University Belfast's School of Arts, English and Languages. His research focuses on Victorian literature, colonial/postcolonial studies, and digital humanities. He holds a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (2011), funded by the Helen Philip Memorial Scholarship and Carnegie Trust. Before joining Queen's in 2016, he was a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow and affiliated with the Institute for Collaborative Research in the Humanities.
Livingstone's work bridges literary analysis and historical scholarship. He led the digital critical edition of David Livingstone's Missionary Travels Manuscript (1857) , awarded the MLA Approved Edition designation. His book Livingstone’s ‘Lives’: A Metabiography of a Victorian Icon (2014) examines the explorer’s posthumous legacy. Current projects include Fictions of Exploration , analyzing Victorian explorers' fictional works.
His research interests include travel writing, imperialism, and African literature. He has supervised numerous PhD students in Victorian studies and colonial fiction. Awards include the AHRC Research Preparation Master's Scheme Award and Carnegie Trust Scholarship. Livingstone actively engages in public lectures and media interviews about Victorian exploration and colonial history.
