Dr. Iain Macleod Higgins is a Professor of English at the University of Victoria (UVic), where he has been teaching since 2001. His primary affiliation is with the Department of English and the Medieval Studies Program. He holds a BA and MA from the University of British Columbia and a PhD from Harvard University.
His research and teaching focus on medieval English, Scottish, and French literature, travel writing, utopian/dystopian fiction, and poetry across historical periods. Higgins has held significant roles, including Humanities Faculty Fellow in Scottish Studies (2010–2012), Director of the Medieval Studies Program (2006–2009), and Associate Editor of Canadian Literature (1995–2003, 2013–2014). Currently, he serves on the editorial board of The Malahat Review.
His work emphasizes textual analysis and cultural history, particularly in medieval travel narratives like The Book of John Mandeville, which earned him an honorable mention from the MLA. Other notable contributions include Writing East (2001 John Nicholas Brown Prize winner) and edited collections like From a Speaking Place. His scholarship bridges medieval and modern literary studies, exploring themes of identity, colonialism, and cross-cultural exchange.
