Dr. John Tucker is a Professor of English at the University of Victoria, specializing in Scandinavian and Medieval studies. He joined UVic in 1979, serving as founding director of the Medieval Studies Program and Chair of the English Department. His research focuses on medieval languages (Old Icelandic/Old English), literary art forms, and their relationships with contemporary artistic practices. He co-authored the Department's Writer's Guide and remains active in editorial roles, currently editing Scandinavian-Canadian Studies (Open Access) and managing the Beck Trust promoting Icelandic cultural awareness.
Educations: B.A. (English) from St. Michael's College (Toronto), B.Litt. (Old Icelandic) from Oxford University, M.A. & Ph.D. (Literary Criticism) from Toronto. His doctoral work examined Ezra Pound's early critical writings (1910-1920).
Research Interests: Medieval Nordic texts, saga narratives, medieval cinema adaptations, and the linguistic dimensions of medieval literature. He teaches specialized courses on Old Norse poetry, Chaucer, and medieval film studies.
Key Contributions: Edited volumes include Scandinavian-Canadian Studies (2006-2010), Sagas of the Icelanders: A Book of Essays (1989), and co-authored dictionaries/glossaries for Old Norse studies. His scholarship bridges literary analysis with cultural-historical contexts, emphasizing textual fidelity and interartistic dialogues.
