Tamar Heller is a Professor of English at the University of Cincinnati. She specializes in Victorian literature with emphases on gender studies, Gothic fiction, and sensation novels. Her teaching also includes large-enrollment courses on Harry Potter novels. She holds a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College (1981) and a Ph.D. from Yale University (1988).
Her research explores intersections of gender, sexuality, and genre in Victorian fiction, particularly focusing on authors like Wilkie Collins, Rhoda Broughton, and J.S. Le Fanu. She has edited works by Rhoda Broughton and co-edited collections on Gothic fiction and food studies in women’s writing.
Key research areas include female Gothic traditions, the representation of female desire, and the cultural contexts of sensation fiction. Her scholarship bridges literary analysis with feminist theory and historical contexts, often addressing marginalized voices and contested narratives.
Publications span book chapters, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles analyzing themes of body politics, racial ambiguity, and pedagogical approaches to Victorian Gothic. Current projects include an edition of Broughton’s Not Wisely but Too Well and a monograph on Broughton’s authorial agency.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on 19th-century Gothic literature, Victorian fiction, and children’s fantasy. She has contributed to curriculum development through her work on MLA teaching guides for Gothic fiction and Jane Eyre.
