Dr Jo Parsons is a Lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Falmouth University since 2019. She specializes in Victorian Literature, Gender Studies, and popular women’s writing. Her research bridges historical and contemporary genres, with a focus on masculinity, the body, and cultural representation. She co-edits the Gender and the Body in Literature and Culture, and Nineteenth-Century and Neo-Victorian Cultures book series for Edinburgh University Press, and serves as assistant editor of Revenant and editor of the Wilkie Collins Journal.
- Qualifications: PhD (Bath Spa University, 2019), PG Cert in Professional Learning (2017), PGCE (2012), MA English (2009), BA(Hons) English (2008).
- Professional Roles: Co-founder of Scholarly Association of Menopausal Studies, member of British Association of Victorian Studies, book prize judge, and invited speaker at academic events worldwide.
Her research interests include Victorian Sensation Fiction (particularly Wilkie Collins), 20th/21st century commercial women’s fiction ('Bonkbusters'), and intersections between genre fiction and gender. She teaches 18th–21st Century Literature, Gothic Theory, and Crime Fiction.
Recent publications include edited volumes on women’s writing and Victorian male bodies, peer-reviewed articles on food symbolism and gender in Victorian texts, and contributions to literary companions. She actively engages in public humanities through podcasts and documentaries like 'Therapeutic Fasting' (2012).
- Awards: Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
- Advising: Supervises PhDs in Victorian/neo-Victorian studies, crime/gothic fiction, and feminist literary analysis.
