Education:
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, University of California, Berkeley
- M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, University of California, Berkeley
- Dual B.S. (degrees not specified), University of California, Berkeley
Research Interests:
Hsia's current research focuses on computer science education, particularly in developing contemporary training for teaching assistants and future instructors. He is involved with the CSE590E CS Ed seminar and ComputingEd@UW. His past research in synthetic biology explored engineered multicellular behaviors in bacteria, including pattern formation through diffusion-driven instability (Turing patterns), lateral inhibition mechanisms, and synthetic mutualism systems.
Teaching Portfolio:
He has extensive experience teaching foundational courses including Computer Science Principles, Systems Programming, Computer Organization, Digital Logic, Circuits, and Control Systems. His teaching emphasizes hands-on learning and has earned him the UW ACM Teaching Award and nominations for the UW Distinguished Teaching Award.
Scientific Awards:
- UW ACM Teaching Award
- Nominated for UW Distinguished Teaching Award
Advising & Mentorship:
Hsia actively mentors teaching assistants and future CS educators. He has advised students like Sam Wolfson (now at ExtraHop), Travis McGaha (Lecturer at UPenn), and Kyrie Dowling (Lecturer at UPenn). He runs independent TA interviews for his courses and provides detailed guidance for students seeking recommendations for graduate programs.
