Justin Bishop

Dr. Justin Bishop is the Jane B. and Edwin P. Jenevein, M.D. Chair in Pathology and Professor and Chief of Anatomic Pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He specializes in surgical pathology of head and neck diseases and endocrine pathology, with a focus on tumor classification and HPV-related cancers. His research includes the molecular characterization of salivary gland and sinonasal tumors, such as DEK-AFF2 fusion-associated carcinomas and SMARCB1-deficient carcinomas. Dr. Bishop has authored over 250 journal articles, 35 book chapters, and 9 books, including the WHO Classification of Head and Neck Tumors. He serves as editor-in-chief of Seminars in Diagnostic Pathology and associate editor for Modern Pathology and JAMA Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

His work bridges clinical diagnosis and molecular pathology, emphasizing genetic and immunohistochemical markers for tumor classification. Recent studies highlight novel fusions (e.g., STRN-ALK, MEF2C-SS18) and their diagnostic implications.
