Juliette Stapanian Apkarian is an Associate Professor of Russian Studies at Emory University and founding chair of the Department of Russian and East Asian Languages and Cultures (REALC). She holds core membership in the Program in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies (REEES) and affiliated roles in Film and Media Studies, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Islamic Civilizations. Her research bridges humanities and social/natural sciences, focusing on political and cultural dynamics in Russia and the Caucasus since the 19th century, particularly intersections of verbal/visual arts, diversity, identity, and social change. She has published Mayakovsky’s Cubo-Futurist Vision and articles on artistic avantgardism, with upcoming work on empire, nation, and multiculturalism in Eurasia.
Apkarian has received the Creekmore Award for Internationalization and secured major grants for research and program development. She has served as a guest curator and consultant on international projects. Currently on leave for the 2024–25 academic year, her office is located in the Modern Languages Building, 303.
