Julien Guglielmini is a Research Engineer at the Department of Computational Biology, Institut Pasteur (Paris, France) since 2015. He is a member of the GIPHY (Groupe d'Inférence Phylogénétique) expert group. His academic journey includes postdoctoral positions at IAME, INSERM UMR 1137 (2013-2015) and Institut Pasteur (2010-2013), following a PhD in Bacterial Genetics and Physiology at Free University of Brussels (2005-2010) and a Master’s in Ecology, Systematics, and Evolution at Paris-Sud University (2004).
- Education: PhD (2010, Free University of Brussels), Master (2004, Paris-Sud University)
His research focuses on bacterial evolution, genomics, and phylogenetics, with a emphasis on horizontal gene transfer, type IV secretion systems (T4SS), and genomic taxonomy of pathogens. He has developed bioinformatics tools like CONJscan-T4SSscan for T4SS detection and BIGSdb-Pasteur for strain nomenclature.
Recent publications highlight his work on Yersinia enterocolitica evolution under antibiotic pressure, genomic surveillance of pathogens via cgMLST, and phylogenetic analysis of Corynebacterium diphtheriae during outbreaks. His studies often bridge computational biology with public health applications.
Projects include leadership in the Evolutionary relationships between giant viruses and eukaryotes (2017-2018) and contributions to Oxford Nanopore sequencing for pathogen detection. He collaborates extensively with teams like the Hub of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics and Quantitative Evolutionary Microbiology (IAME, INSERM).
