Dr. Julie Whitfield is a Senior Lecturer in Conference & Events Management at Bournemouth University Business School, leading the Postgraduate Programme for Events Management. She holds a PhD in Conference Tourism (2005) and has extensive international teaching experience across institutions in Macau, Switzerland, Thailand, Israel, and Cyprus. Her research focuses on sustainability in events, corporate social responsibility, and attendee decision-making processes, with a particular emphasis on reducing single-use plastics in conferences and advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Education: PhD in Conference Tourism (Bournemouth University, 2005); MSc in Tourism, Management & Marketing (1998); PGCE in Education (1997); BSc (Hons) Human Geography (1996).
Research Interests: Greening conferences, environmental initiatives, sustainable event management, attendee behavior, and the application of UN SDGs to festivals and events. She co-founded the International Conference on Events (ICE) to foster research and innovation in events management, hosting editions in the UK, China, and South Africa.
Her articles analyze topics like single-use plastics reduction, historical event storytelling, and venue sustainability frameworks. She currently serves as Guest Editor for the International Journal of Event and Festival Management and holds external examiner roles at multiple universities.
Awards: Runner-up Best Paper Award (International Conference on Global Sustainable Tourism, 2010).
Advising: Supervised two completed PhDs and currently guides one. Serves as academic advisor for M.Sc. Events Management students and oversees dissertations. Active in organizing conferences like ICE and collaborates globally on sustainability initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Leads ICE conference series; contributes to the MUST University Macau as Visiting Associate Professor; part of editorial boards and international research networks focusing on event sustainability and CSR.
