Julie Taylor serves as Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Birmingham and holds the position of Professor of Child Protection. As a nurse scientist specializing in child maltreatment, her current research focuses on child sexual abuse, disclosures of abuse, neglect, and faith-linked child abuse, while maintaining a strategic emphasis on research leadership development. She contributed to the UK's Research Excellence Framework as a panel member for Allied Health, Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy during both REF 2014 and REF 2021 cycles.
Her educational qualifications include:
- PhD in Child Protection from the University of Dundee (2000)
- MSc in Social Research and Evaluation from the University of Huddersfield (1995)
- BSc (Hons) in Nursing with Education from Huddersfield Polytechnic (1992)
- Registered Nurse Teacher qualification (1992)
- Registered Nurse certification from St James’ University Hospital, Leeds (1986)
Professor Taylor's research portfolio spans critical child protection domains including witchcraft-related abuse, disability-inclusive child protection, and welfare needs of children with albinism, with methodological expertise in qualitative approaches and theoretical frameworks. Her work demonstrates strong regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa and intersects with gender-based violence analysis, systematically addressing disclosure mechanisms and 'good enough' parenting standards within complex family systems.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal expanding interdisciplinary scope beyond core child protection into women's health (menopause research via the MARIE Project), sexual violence services, and marginalized population health. Key thematic patterns include intersectional analysis of forced migrant families' palliative care experiences, structural stigma in healthcare access for sex workers, and long-term immunological consequences of childhood maltreatment, reflecting growing collaboration with global health researchers.
Her distinguished recognition includes:
- Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing (2013)
- Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science (2005)
Professor Taylor actively mentors doctoral candidates across 22 European countries and serves on influential national and international advisory bodies including the Medical Research Council, National Institute for Health Research, and Big Lottery Fund. Her extensive grant review portfolio encompasses ESRC, Nuffield Foundation, US National Institutes of Health, and Norwegian Government commissions, with particular focus on translating research into policy through Scottish Government working groups and NICE guidance development.
She co-founded the Gender and Child Welfare Network and Scottish Centre for Child Care and Protection, maintaining active collaborations with University of Michigan, University of Tampere, and Lebanon's University of Balamand through visiting professorships and curriculum development initiatives focused on qualitative methods.
