Gabriel Otterman is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences at Linköping University. He is affiliated with Barnafrid, a research network focused on child maltreatment and family violence.
His research focuses on child maltreatment, particularly through interdisciplinary approaches combining public health, healthcare policy, and qualitative methodologies. He contributes to international studies analyzing coding standards (ICD-10), surveillance systems, and participatory approaches in child abuse research.
Recent publications highlight his work in cross-national comparisons of child protection policies and the development of consensus frameworks for child maltreatment research. He collaborates with multidisciplinary teams across Europe, including COST Action networks and Euro-CAN partners.
Current findings from his research emphasize gaps in healthcare guidelines for sexual abuse victims, as shown in a 2024 news item highlighting that only half of 34 European countries have national protocols for treating sexually abused children.
