Dr Julie Ross is a Lecturer in Dyslexia and SpLD tutor at the University of Edinburgh, holding qualifications such as a PhD in Art and Environmental Change and a Postgraduate Diploma in Dyslexia and Literacy (with Qualified Teacher Status). She is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE and a registered specialist teacher with the British Dyslexia Association. Her roles include membership in the BDA Accreditation Board, the Scottish Parliament’s Cross Party Group on Dyslexia, and various professional associations like ADSHE and PATOSS.
Her research focuses on neurodiversity, creativity, and inclusive education, with projects including widening access in creative education, evaluating participatory art’s impact on well-being, and enhancing employment opportunities in creative industries. She has coordinated national initiatives like the ACES project and led EU-funded design training programs. Key presentations include discussions on dyslexia in higher education, creativity-visual thinking linkages, and transition challenges for neurodiverse students.
Dr Ross advocates for intersectional approaches to neurodiversity and promotes specialist tuition for dyslexia. She has contributed to policy through parliamentary engagements and collaborates across education sectors to advance equity in creative fields.
