Her work focuses on forensic psychology, victimology, and offender behavior, with expertise in risk assessment, aggression, and mental health interventions in forensic settings. She coordinates the master's track in Clinical Forensic Psychology and Victimology, emphasizing understanding offending behavior and psychopathological treatments for offenders and victims.
Dr. Karsten holds a PhD from the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and a clinical psychology degree from the University of Amsterdam. Her research spans forensic psychiatry, including studies on insomnia treatment in forensic patients and the role of conscience in criminal behavior. She has conducted projects funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), such as investigating victim selection in online dating contexts.
Her work integrates empirical and clinical approaches, addressing issues like aggression prediction, sleep quality’s impact on forensic populations, and cross-cultural emotional responses to trauma. She actively publishes in peer-reviewed journals, contributing to both theoretical frameworks (e.g., conscience functioning models) and applied clinical studies (e.g., randomized controlled trials for insomnia).
