Maarten Eisma, PhD, is an Associate Professor in Clinical Psychology at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. He holds a faculty position within the Heymans Institute for Psychological Research, under the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. His academic journey includes a PhD from Utrecht University and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Aberdeen, focusing on behavioral change techniques in smoking cessation. He returned to the University of Groningen in 2017, entering the tenure track and securing tenure in 2021.
Eisma’s research centers on prolonged grief disorder, emotion regulation, and repetitive thought processes following bereavement. He leads projects like the ‘Sleep therapy for prolonged grief disorder’ and ‘Grief’s paradox: Approach and avoidance’, supported by grants from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and the Dutch Victim Fund. His work bridges clinical practice and digital interventions, developing apps like ‘My Grief’ for bereaved parents.
He actively contributes to academic societies, serving on editorial boards for Death Studies and Journal of Loss and Trauma. Awards include the 2023 Research Recognition Award. His teaching roles include coordinating master’s theses and academic skills programs in clinical psychology. Eisma collaborates internationally, investigating grief across cultures and contexts, including post-pandemic bereavement and traffic accident trauma.
