Julie Farstad is a Professor of Painting and co-chair of the Painting Department at the Kansas City Art Institute. Her work explores native plants, motherhood, and cultivation in the context of ecological crisis through mixed media studio art and community-based painting projects.

- MFA in Painting from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Her research integrates ecological activism with artistic practice, focusing on Midwest native plants. Projects like Flowers For Marlborough address neighborhood blight by combining large-scale painting, free workshops, and seedling distribution. Her 2024 Wildflower Revolution and Emergence series highlight intricate plant forms through oil, acrylic, and mixed media.
Julie lives in Kansas City, Missouri, with her family, maintaining an active studio practice while engaging in public art initiatives.
